Pier 21 Nation Builders' Plaza

 Client:
Vollick McKee's Role: Vollick McKee worked closely with Pier 21 personnel and sponsors to deliver a complete site design for the notable Pier 21 Nation Builders’ Plaza at the Port of Halifax. The plaza is situated at the busy Halifax cruise ship landing, where tourists will be presented with subtle nautical elements incorporated into the overall design.
The plaza includes a central stone-paved pedestrian space with sandblasted granite Provincial Crests set into an intentionally wavy, yet geometric paver pattern. Flame finished granite seating walls present laser inscribed commemorative plaques integrated into a circular landscaped element. Lighted bollards mark the smooth transition to a vehicular cul-de-sac, then into the adjacent boardwalk area. It is anticipated that the plaza structure will be a national landmark for many years to come.
Work included designing and detailing numerous exterior features including dramatic paving patterns and stone-faced landscape seat walls.
Responding to serious design challenges such as loading restrictions on the waterfront land, and storm water management (in response to high tide conditions), integration into existing construction and underground services, and selecting materials that blend with a historic setting.
Site planning and detailed design work resulting in the fluid integration of the mechanical, structural, and architectural characteristics of the site.
